Overview
The Data Basics training will build an awareness of data terminology and examine the purpose of data use in early childhood settings. Participants can apply the lessons from the training to their daily work, no matter what type or quantity of data their programs have. This training will support early childhood programs and providers in cultivating a climate and infrastructure of data utilization for continuous quality improvement.

No prior experience with data is necessary.

Objective
Upon completion, the learner will be able to:
  • Explore the need for data to improve teacher practice and student and family outcomes by viewing the Data Utilization If…Then Story and identifying two types of data used in their program. Learners will also examine three case studies and reflect on the importance of continuous quality improvement.
  • Build an awareness of data terminology by utilizing the data-driven glossary of terms to explore 3-5 terms that are new to them.
  • Examine their role in data use by identifying each staff members’ role in data utilization and reflecting on three data-sharing vignettes with associated data confidentiality concerns.
  • Describe and distinguish between the three multiple sources of data levels and four outcome areas using the Multiple Sources of Data for Different Purposes and Level handout.
  • Analyze the differences in using data to change practices or to inform professional development at all levels by examining two scenarios.

Competencies

This training aligns to Colorado's Competencies for Early Childhood Educators and Administrators.

  • Child Observation and Assessment 5.1: Describes the importance of analyzing and interpreting unbiased child observation and assessment data using both indirect and direct methodologies.
  • Child Observation and Assessment 2.1: Identifies how the results of child observations and assessments are used to adjust and individualize instruction.

This course has been recognized as aligned to The Colorado Competencies and meeting best practice standards for adult instruction through the Colorado Shines PDIS Training Alignment Process. The Rules Regulating Child Care Facilities, issued by the Division of Early Care and Learning, Colorado Department of Human Services, take precedence over any course content.
