Overview
Child care providers learn to safely prepare more home-cooked meals for the children in their care. This training includes an overview of food skills and safety as well as hands-on-meal preparation using Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) approved recipes.

Face to Face and Virtual Webinar options. Please see information below on how to register. Virtual Webinar requires internet access and a device, such as a laptop or desktop computer, to participate.

Target Audience 
Early childhood educators and directors, Family child care home providers, Cooks employed with early childhood programs 

serving primarily low-income families

Recommendations
Participants must be working in a home- or center-based early childhood education setting with children ages 0-5. 

Fee

This training is offered at no cost to early childhood education professionals.


Objective
Upon completion, learner will be able to:

  • Identify and discuss basic principles of preventing foodborne illness with the Bacterial Bundles demonstration and during hands-on food preparation, including proper hand washing and sanitation techniques, and using food thermometers to check the internal temperature of foods.
  • Identify simple ways to modify recipes to meet their needs with the Making Recipes Work for You handout.
  • Practice knife safety and food preparation techniques through hands-on cooking of 2 to 3 recipes.
  • Set goals and action items about food safety and recipe choices with the Safe Cooking with Confidence worksheet.

Competencies
This training aligns to Colorado's Competencies for Early Childhood Educators and Administrators.

  • Health, Safety and Nutrition 14.1: Describes safe and sanitary food handling procedures when purchasing, storing, preparing, and serving meals, snacks, breast milk, and formula.
  • Health, Safety and Nutrition 16.1: Describes and models professional practices to ensure health hazards in meals and snacks (e.g., choking and allergies) are eliminated.

This course has been recognized as aligned to The Colorado Competencies and meeting best practice standards for adult instruction through the Colorado Shines PDIS Training Alignment Process. The Rules Regulating Child Care Facilities, issued by the Division of Early Care and Learning, Colorado Department of Human Services, take precedence over any course content.
