Cooking Matters: Meal Appeal

Course Number
Early childhood is an ideal time to instill an appreciation for consuming a variety of healthy foods. In this training, providers will take part in hands-on activities that show various ways to encourage acceptance of healthy foods among children in their care.

Target Audience

 Early childhood educators and directors, Family child care home providers, Cooks employed with early childhood programs 

serving primarily low-income families.

Participants must be working in a home- or center-based early childhood education setting with children ages 0-5.


This training is offered at no cost to early childhood education professionals.

Upon completion, learner will be able to:

  • Discuss and name safe, age-appropriate tasks for children in the kitchen using the Cooking with Kids handout.
  • Identify ways to prepare and serve foods so that they appeal to children using the Meals that Appeal to Kids handout and completing the Meal Appeal Taste Test Activity.
  • Discuss and compare the pros and cons of using different forms of fruits and vegetables through the Fresh, Frozen, Canned Pros and Cons Group Activity.
  • Set goals and action items about introducing healthy foods to children with the Meals that Appeal to Kids worksheet.
This training aligns to Colorado's Competencies for Early Childhood Educators and Administrators.

  • Health, Safety and Nutrition 18.2: Implements and ensures meals and snacks that are nutritionally sound based on program policies, procedures, practices, development, and special needs of children.

This course is available through Cooking Matters Colorado. This course has been recognized as aligned to The Colorado Competencies and meeting best practice standards for adult instruction through the Colorado Shines PDIS Training Alignment Process. The Rules Regulating Child Care Facilities, issued by the Division of Early Care and Learning, Colorado Department of Human Services, take precedence over any course content.

Paper certificates might not be issued at this training. Please do not upload a course certificate that is already linked to your Colorado Shines PDIS account as this may delay processing of professional credentials.
