Cooking Matters: Menu Management on a Budget

In this training, early childhood care providers will identify menu planning and shopping strategies they can use to make the most of their food dollars.

Target Audience
Early childhood educators and directors, Family child care home providers, Cooks employed with early childhood programs 

serving primarily low-income families


Participants must be working in a home- or center-based early childhood education setting with children ages 0-5.


This training is offered at no cost to early childhood education professionals.

Upon completion, the learner will be able to:

  • Name the benefits of planning menus in advance using Step-by-Step Menu Planning handout, Stretching Your Ingredients handout, and the Stocking Your Pantry handout and completion of the Recipe Makeover activity.
  • Practice several strategies to save money when food shopping through completion of the Roadmap to Healthier Meals activity.
  • Set goals and action items around food budgeting with the Menu Management on a Budget worksheet.
This training aligns to Colorado's Competencies for Early Childhood Educators and Administrators.

  • Program Planning and Development 13.1: Describe ways to use materials, supplies and equipment efficiently.

This course is available through Cooking Matters Colorado. The Rules Regulating Child Care Facilities, issued by the Division of Early Care and Learning, Colorado Department of Human Services, take precedence over any course content.
