Playground Safety for School-Age Programs

Course Number

This is only a licensing requirement for school-age programs. Early childhood programs are NOT required to take this course.

Who Should Take This Course Under new State Licensing rules, a playground safety course is required for program leaders in school-age programs that use a public or private playground at least once a week. 

A “school-age child care center” is a child care center that provides care for five or more children who are between 5 and 18 years of age. These programs are commonly known as “day camps,”  “summer camps,”  “summer playground programs,”  “before and after school programs,” and “extended day programs.”

Who Should Not Take This Course

If you work in an early childhood program, take the course "Playground Safety for Child Care Centers."  

About This Course

This course was developed for school-age child care centers according to Colorado State Licensing Regulations and Consumer Product and Safety Commission (CPSC) best practices. This course will give you the knowledge and tools to identify hazards and actively manage and maintain playgrounds to keep children safe. 

This course is a prerequisite for the course "Injury Prevention for School-Age Programs that Regularly Use a Playground."

Module 1

  • Identify appropriate and inappropriate playground design for infants, toddlers and school-age children
  • Determine the correct use zones for playgrounds for infants, toddlers and school-age children
  • Choose appropriate materials and depth of materials for playground resilient surfacing
  • Determine best strategies for active supervision on the playground
  • Identify routine maintenance needs for playground equipment maintenance

Module 2

  • Identify the general hazards of the playground and how to reduce the risk of those hazards
  • Select the appropriate sun protection for children playing outdoors
  • Recognize and avoid the playground’s hidden and seasonal hazards

7.712.42 Required Personnel and Qualifications 
B. Program Leaders
Each program leader must be at least 18 years of age, demonstrate ability to work with children, and must meet the following qualifications:
1. Complete the Department-approved course in injury prevention;
2. Complete the Department-approved course in playground safety for School-Aged Child Care Centers. This requirement does not apply to day camps that do not regularly use a playground; and
3. Must have at least three (3) months (460 hours) of full-time or equivalent part-time satisfactory and verifiable experience with school-age children.
