Overview
This training teaches providers how to get the most nutrition within their budget by engaging them to practice food shopping skills to make healthy and affordable choices at the supermarket.

Target Audience
Early childhood educators and directors, Family child care home providers, Cooks employed with early childhood programs 

serving primarily low-income families

Recommendations
Participants must be working in a home- or center-based early childhood education setting with children ages 0-5.

Fee

This training is offered at no cost to early childhood education professionals.


Objective
Upon completion, learner will be able to:

  • Identify at least three economical ways of purchasing fruits and vegetables through label reading and practice of comparing unit prices using hands-on examples.
  • Identify whole grains by comparing food labels.
  • Identify sugar amounts in various foods through the Sugar Overload Activity.
  • Practice budget friendly meal planning with the Take the $10 Challenge activity.
Competencies
This training aligns to Colorado's Competencies for Early Childhood Educators and Administrators.

  • Health, Safety and Nutrition 18.2: Implements and ensures meals and snacks that are nutritionally sound based on program policies, procedures, practices, development, and special needs of children.

This course is available through Cooking Matters Colorado. Please contact Heather Aguilar (haguilar@strength.org or 303-801-0319) or Amber Troutman (atroutman@strength.org or 303-801-0178) with Cooking Matters Colorado to schedule a training for your program. It is recommended that programs schedule a 2-hour Cooking Matters course in conjunction with this training. Additional Information

This course has been recognized as aligned to The Colorado Competencies and meeting best practice standards for adult instruction through the Colorado Shines PDIS Training Alignment Process. The Rules Regulating Child Care Facilities, issued by the Division of Early Care and Learning, Colorado Department of Human Services, take precedence over any course content.
